The first mention of the phrase "man of God" was in Judges 13:6 (AMP):
6 Then the woman went and told her husband, saying, “A Man of God came to me and his appearance was like the appearance of the Angel of God, very awesome. I did not ask Him where he came from, and he did not tell me his name.
This was how Manoah's wife (Samson's mother), perceived the Angel of God who brought the good news of how she would conceive her miracle son, Samson. There was something about that angel that made her associate him to be "of God". The next scriptural reference to this phrase was in 1 Samuel 2:27, where a "man of God" came to Eli to warn him about his wayward sons and their impending judgment. From then till Malachi, the term "man of God" was mentioned more in the book of Kings and Chronicles to refer to God's special messengers and prophets, than any other book in the Old Testament. These men had the same thing in common - they had a unique aura (that was associated with the God of Israel) that set them apart wherever they went. They also lived their lives in consecration and reverence to the God they were associated.
Now let's look through the New Testament to see how many references there are. Surprisingly there are only two (2) references to the term "man of God" in the entire New Testament. The first and second references are shown below:
Reference 1
10 For the love of money [that is, the greedy desire for it and the willingness to gain it unethically] is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves [through and through] with many sorrows. 11 But as for you, O man of God, flee from these things; aim at and pursue righteousness [true goodness, moral conformity to the character of God], godliness [the fear of God], faith, love, steadfastness, and gentleness. - 1 Timothy 6:10-11(AMP)
Reference 2
16 All Scripture is God-breathed [given by divine inspiration] and is profitable for instruction, for conviction [of sin], for correction [of error and restoration to obedience], for training in righteousness [learning to live in conformity to God’s will, both publicly and privately—behaving honorably with personal integrity and moral courage]; 17 So that the man of Godmay be complete and proficient, outfitted and thoroughly equipped for every good work. - 2 Timothy 3:16-17(AMP)
From the scriptures above, it is obvious that a "man of God" refers to every believer, and not the context used in the Old Testament of only a select few. Since Jesus has given you eternal life, the life of God Himself, you are fully His. As a result, every believer is a special messenger here on earth. You are the light of the world and the salt of the earth. Your primary assignment is to preach the good news and be witnesses of Jesus to the ends of the earth. You are a "man of God". You are a "woman of God". This title is not only restricted to your pastors, teachers, evangelists or any other office holder within the body of Christ. It is not restricted only to believers who manifest one or more gifts of the Spirit. It is meant for every believer including you.
Begin to see yourself as this. Carry the consciousness that you are a man/woman "of God". You are an ambassador of God here on earth. You are "of God" because you carry the Spirit of the living God in you. Stop looking at your church leaders as the only men/women of God within the body of Christ. Like the above scripture says, God's written word is "...so that the man of God (i.e. you) may be complete and proficient...for every good work". Since you have high expectations from the men and women of God you've tagged, it is high time you met those same expectations! From God's perspective, you are no different! Yes, they are your leaders and you must accord them that respect (scriptures instructs us to do so), but you need to remember that you are all members of Christ's body. God is coming back for a body that is clean, holy and without spot or wrinkle. Consecrate yourself unto God. Cultivate God's anointing and presence such that when people see and interact with you, they know you are "of God". The grace to live up to this has been given to you. Open your heart, walk the path and live the life of a man/woman of God. You are blessed!
Have a blessed week!
