A similar story plays out in scriptures as well, albeit from a different angle. Samuel, the priest, was told by God to go to Jesse's house to anoint the new King of Israel since Saul had been rejected. He gets there and gets carried away by the appearances of Jesse's sons, particularly Eliab, the eldest son.
6 When they arrived, Samuel took one look at Eliab and thought, “Here he is! God’s anointed!”
7 But God told Samuel, “Looks aren’t everything. Don’t be impressed with his looks and stature. I’ve already eliminated him. God judges persons differently than humans do. Men and women look at the face; God looks into the heart.” - 1 Samuel 16:6-7 The MSG
Samuel was surprised to find out that the yard stick he was using was totally different from God's measurement standard - the HEART. If God were to judge you based on the state of your heart, how would you look? Unlike the earthly "How Do I Look?" program which focuses on getting individuals looking great on the outside because man obviously judges based on style, body structure and appearance, God is explicitly clear that he judges man based on the state of his heart. When man raves all about dressing properly, looking good, losing weight, skin care, make-up, personal hygiene, exercise and all sorts of ways to 'keep up appearances', all God is saying to you is PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR HEART!
You can't fool God by confessing things to Him and not meaning them in your heart. Why do you think salvation comes by the conviction of the Holy Spirit? Because man can say one thing but mean the opposite in his heart and thus needs the Holy Spirit to reveal the true state of his heart to man. It is this same Holy Spirit that helps our hearts to stay in line with God's will and be continually conformed into His image (2 Corinthians 3:18). It is out of your heart that issues of life flows out from (Proverbs 4:23). It is also out of your heart that you PRODUCE the works you do, whether good or bad (Luke 6:45). These works are manifest through your dressing, speech, attitude, acts and so on. Therefore, rather than concentrate all your efforts on your physical appearance, concentrate on feeding your heart with the right things (God's word) and looking good on the inside. Become more conscious about God's judgment as against man's judgment on issues. Concentrate on pleasing God more as against pleasing men. Ask God for wisdom on how to balance pleasing Him without being a stumbling block to fellow believers or even unbelievers regarding this gospel that we preach. Let the Holy Spirit help you truly x-ray your heart so as to look your part before God. How do you look?!
Have a blessed week!
